HAPPY NEW YEAR
Goal setting for the new year
Much like the phrase ‘I’ll start on Monday’, the New Year gives us all a burst of motivation to improve on ourselves from the year before. For most of us we might scribble down our goals on a page in a new hardback and forget about it in 3 weeks. Let this year be different. Let your goals become the prime focus above everything else. So how to go about doing this ?
Setting your goals
We often get too broad in our approach to goal setting. When looking to achieve a goal, try to be specific. Getting fit can be a goal but it’s also too broad. However trying to achieve a sub 30 minute 5km run and squat 60kg for reps can put some visible challenge to your goal. It is important to put the right challenge in place for the achievement you are working towards. The problem a lot of us face is that we don’t place importance on our goals. They should be so important that they scare us into doing them. It can be a scenario that you need to create a mindset that is a life or death situation. Sometimes it can be, especially when you set goals in career and relationships. Giving up on a career goal can lead to a temporary death of future happiness etc. Only ever have a Plan A.
Let discipline and routine outperform motivation.
It is very much evident from our time as children that routine works in our favour. It’s only when we become adults that we really try to exist somewhat outside of it. It is then that we rely on motivation more. Examples of this are something as simple as waiting to feel like you’re motivated to clean the house or waiting until the last toilet roll runs out to buy more (My most common mistake). Having routine in place will keep us disciplined and less likely to give up on a goal when our motivation is down. So if its training for body fat loss, make sure meal prep and training 3 times a week are in your routine and never missed unless absolutely necessary. If it becomes a lifestyle it becomes achievable.
The climb over the peak.
The highs and lows of the journey towards your goal are of the upmost importance. We learn that failure is good, hard work rewards itself and that life is about enjoying the process. The goals we set should not be boring or lacklustre. We as far as we know only get one shot at life. It’s why our goals should excite us. Imagine your goal being like a road trip with your best friends. The journey creates the trip and the destination is the sprinkle on top of the cake. Never stop improving on yourself physically, mentally and spiritually on this journey. We owe it to ourselves. Trainings should be enjoyed, studying should inspire you and reflecting on yourself should enhance you.
